Adult smokers need cessation support

18 August 2026

Dear Editor,

According to the latest Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) 2024, Pakistan still has more than 22 million tobacco users, with 14 million cigarette smokers. On the other hand, less than 3% of adult smokers successfully quit smoking. These two figures clearly point out the fact that Pakistan has failed to provide cessation services to adult smokers. If an adult smoker decides to quit, they really don’t know where to turn to for support and more often than not their quit attempts falter. Adult smokers need medical and social support both at home and outside home to quit this habit. Cessation clinics at community help, which should be overseen by district administrations, can be of great benefit for adult smokers who want to quit.
